FOR ALL SEASONS — SCHENTELL NUNN

FOR ALL SEASONS — SCHENTELL NUNN

At OZMA we tend to think in terms of seasons. Seasons of the year, of what to wear and what to celebrate, of adventure and ritual and the passing of time, of the shifts in weather and wardrobe that weave the fabric of our days...but we also tend to think of our lives in seasons—who we are now, who we might be becoming, the stories we write in this chapter, and how those stories might shift into the next.

Throughout every season, we have all been shaped and guided so deeply by the mothers and mother-figures in our lives, and, wherever we might be on our journeys towards (or away from) our own motherhoods, we find that the transformative power of mothering is a central thread in the weave of who we are and who we might become.

This year, as our own Heidi is in her first season as mother to her darling River (and celebrating her first "Mother's Day") we wanted to gather some collective wisdom and witnessing from our constellation of OZMA mothers, to capture and honor a moment of this season in the great journey.

When your child will describe their childhood, what is the kind of story you hope they tell?

We have been so excited to meet our son and take the time to learn who he is. I hope he grows to be someone who feels seen and supported, and feels that life always gave him the openness to explore and express himself in all ways.

What did you receive from your own mother/mother-figure that has been the most impactful or formative to you in your mothering?

My mother consistently instilled the confidence in us to take risks and think big. She wanted us to know that we could accomplish anything we put our mind to, and never limited us in our self expression. I hope to bring those same values into my mothering, truly allowing my child to feel safe and seen in their expression and exploration.

How has your personal style shifted (or not) in motherhood?

Currently I reach for whatever will feel cozy and comforting on my body. Since I am carrying a tiny human the priority has truly become what allows me and him the space we need to feel comfortable and at ease. I've always been focused on timeless functional pieces, and feel that will remain the priority as I step into this next chapter of motherhood.

In this season of motherhood, when do you feel most like the best version of yourself?

Motherhood during pregnancy has already provided me with so many incredible lessons and gifts. Surrender, the importance of rest, prioritizing my loved ones, and creating more gentle moments in my life has truly put me in alignment with a self I have been neglecting for a bit now. Becoming a mother has been the biggest blessing of all.

What kind of human do you want to raise?

Brave, kind, and loving beings. Humans who are curious and open and passionate. There is so much unknown of who a human will become, and I just hope our little guy will grow up to be a person who feels good in their body and in their world.
